PET Reimbursement for Alzheimer's Will Have Significant Market Impact
Jan. 10, 2005
PET reimbursement for Alzheimer's disease is a major breakthrough for expanded use of PET in neurology. There are 4.5 million Alzheimer's patients in the US and public support has been growing for early diagnosis with PET.
Several studies have recently employed PET to show notable changes in the brains of Alzheimer's patients. As a result, clinicians have been utilizing PET to identify those people in the earliest stages of the disease in time to slow its progression with available drugs. PET has also been used to show how well the drugs have been working. Therefore, CMS approval of PET imaging for suspected Alzheimer's patients is certain to have a major impact in the future and should bolster brain imaging volume dramatically.
Major efforts are being devoted to identifying the buildup of clumps of protein (amyloid plaque) in the brain and limit this destructive process. Many promising new drugs are in development that target this plaque buildup. Vaccines are also under development that prime the body to resist amyloid plaque.
Researchers are also exploring the use of embryonic stem cells that slow the rate of degeneration in Alzheimer's patients. A key research goal is to predict who will get Alzheimer's before symptoms appear. Since the disease develops over many years, much damage has been done by the time it is diagnosed. Therefore, early diagnosing and treatment may help many patients. Clinicians also want to track the progress of the disease in patients being treated, so that they can quickly determine which treatment is most effective. The challenge is to educate neurologists to the benefits of PET imaging to obtain the highest confidence level in diagnosing their patients. This is a gradual process, however, it should contribute to expanded use of PET in neurology within the near future. These potentials are discussed in detail in Bio-Tech Systems' Bio-Tech Systems' Report 200, Market for PET Radiopharmaceuticals and PET Imaging.
